Prairie House Plans
This is one of the true American styles developed by a creative group of Chicago architects known collectively as the Prairie School led by Frank Lloyd Wright. Prairie style made use of Japanese architecture, specifically the use of horizontal space, flowing interior spaces, hipped roofs with broad eaves, and long bands of windows that often create geometric patterns. Another prominent feature of Prairie style is its integration into the surrounding landscape. Wright’s belief is that a home should exist in harmony with nature and it shouldn’t intrude on the surrounding landscape. Most Prairie style homes are designed with several elements including masonry piers, a wide porch, a cantilevered floor and exterior finishes such as stone, plaster with wood trim, or board and batten. Though short-lived in the United States, this is the first American style to be taken seriously in Europe and still tends to be a popular style throughout the United States. |
